Artificial intelligence:  The promise, threat and legal implications of machines that learn

Featuring Robert W. Kantner, Partner, Jones Day, and Dave Copps, Founder and CEO, Brainspace

The proliferation of artificial intelligence has been dramatic and exponential.  AI is an apex technology that is driving transformational changes in virtually every industry, most visibly in areas like autonomous cars, healthcare and genetics, and technology.  As we begin to put more trust in AI and automation we will be forced to consider the risks and legal issues that arise from within this revolution.

About the speakers:
Bob Kantner is an experienced trial lawyer who has focused his practice on intellectual property and commercial cases.  He has gone to trial 35 times, serving as lead trial counsel in 27 of those trials; his clients have prevailed outright in 70% of those cases.  Seven of Bob's first chair trials have been patent cases and seven others have been trade secret cases.  He has also tried two copyright cases involving software, electronic payment, genetic test, oil and gas exploration, and petrochemical distillation technologies.  Bob has represented clients from China, France, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan, and has handled cases in federal and state courts throughout Texas.

Bob received his BA from the University of Virginia, and JD from Harvard University.  He is a Member of the Board of Directors of Japan-America Society of Dallas/Ft. Worth, was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Ft. Worth from 2013- 2014, and was a Member of the Mayor of Dallas' International Relations Committee from 2010 - 2014.  He is named in The Best Lawyers in America from 2007 - 2015.

Dave Copps is known both locally and internationally as a visionary and evangelist on the role that technology will play in transforming the world.  For the past 15 years, as a technologist, entrepreneur and CEO he has founded, launched and sold three successful companies focused on machine learning and artifical intelligence (AI). Dave currently serves as founder and CEO of Brainspace Corporation, recently acquired by Cyxtera, a global secure infrastructure and cybersecurity company.  Brainspace created the industry standard AI Platform for investigative analytics.  Prior to leading Brainspace, Dave was co-founder and CEO of Engenium Corporation (purchased by Marsh McLennan), where he led the adoption of the company's semantic search platform in organizations in hundreds of companies around the world.

Dave received his BA from the University of North Texas.  He is an active mentor and investor in startup companies and lectures at technology incubators and universities all over the world.  He is a member of the Aspen Institute Roundtable on AI, a frequent speaker at MIT's EmTech conferences and other events centered around machine learing, AI and the future of technology.
